Magma Arizona Railroad
The Narrow Gauge Route
This next segment turns away from the SG grade at about MP 24.7 and will
take us about a mile further north. It will be about 2.5 miles before we get
back into range of the SG route.
Off into the prickly pear as we leave the primitive forest
road. The lighting should be a little better for photos now as we turn further
to the north.
The path degrades quickly as the palo verde and scrub brush invade the
old grade.
After making it through all the vegetation I find a large fill and washout
to contend with. Road NF-8 can be seen to the right which parallels the NG
grade until we get over to Superior.
On the east side of the fill I get a short reprieve before heading back
into the brush.
All of the sudden I hear something that is totally unexpected. It sounds
as though something is rolling along the SG rail to the south. Sure enough
a HiRail is running across the SG fill. I thought this line was inactive!
I wonder how far out of Superior they travel?
Talk about an overgrown grade! I think I'll be exiting stage right for
a stretch.
The grade is up there in that stickery mess somewhere.
I sure could use a chain saw about now. That will end this short stretch
as I proceed down the road to pick up the grade where it opens up a bit.
