Kozo K-27 Smokebox 16B

These pieces will be screwed and soldered together to form a crescent shaped box. The long piece at the top will be rolled to the radius of the inner part of the smokebox. June 28, 2025.

The top piece after rolling and assembling together with the other flat pieces. June 29, 2025.

The four pieces after silver soldering. June 5, 2025.

Using an angle plate and a boring head the hole for the 45/64" pipe is being bored in the assembly. This is performed on both ends and the pipe will be passed through the two holes and soldered. This will eventually be the two flanged ball joint housings that protrude out of the smokebox to supply steam to the cylinders. June 6, 2025.

The assembly after boring both ends and a test fit of the brass bar. July 12, 2025.

The top and bottom of the assembly have been trimmed down leaving the ends which will be the flanges around the bar. The bar has been bored and countersunk for the lathe centers in the next step. The bar will need to be soldered to the assembly before the lathe work starts. July 12, 2025.

The bar has been soldered to the assembly and next the sides will be trimmed off for the lathe work. July 16, 2025.

The flanges have been turned down to the final diameter of about 1.4". Next will be trimming off the two pieces and facing each end of the bar. There will also be some tapping work. July 17, 2025.

The completed parts after threading and facing. These will house a ball joint in the steam pipe to allow for some off axis movement. The ball will surround the pipe and slide into this fitting and then a fitting with male threads will trap the ball in place. July 20, 2025.

An arbor was made to drill the holes in the two 1/2" brass balls that will allow some adjustment of the steam pipes relative to the cylinders. July 25, 2025.

The two steam pipes have been made and the ball joints are fitted. July 26, 2025.

The two fittings to trap the balls in place were made today. The upper view shows how all of the pieces are assembled. July 27, 2025.

The large pieces are the steam pipe glands that will be threaded into the steam cylinder and encapsulate the steam pipe coming down out of the smoke box. The small parts are the O-ring retainers that are inserted into the top of the glands. August 17 2025.

This is a look at the recently machined piping parts attached to the cylinder assemblies. August 17, 2025.

This is the T "pipe" assembly that will attach to the steam pipe exiting the front of the boiler and provides two thread outlets that will connect to the cylinders. August 31, 2025.

The copper tube has been soldered into the T-pipe with the captive pipe fitting to attach to the steam pipe. Four more pipe fittings have been machined which will attach copper tubing between the T-pipe and the cylinders. September 6, 2025.

Two steam pipe casings have been roughed out with a 50 degree angle on the top which will be filed to fit the diameter of the smokebox. These slide down over the previously machined steam pipe glands to provide a nice finished look. September 7, 2025.
